Lack of Muzzle Flashes? Is this a bug or intentional?

I just bought the game and so far am really enjoying it. Breath of fresh air in the online FPS genre.

One issue that really sticks out for me though is the lack of muzzle flashes when firing guns and when witnessing enemies fire their guns. Also, there is no background lighting of the environment when someone fires a gun so the flash you would expect to light up an area and expose the enemy's firing position is non-existent. It makes spotting the enemy quite difficult and I'm not sure if it's really "realistic".

Are muzzle flashes from guns broken in this game? There are muzzle flashes present, but they are extremely subdued to the point where it's easier to spot an enemy from a distance from the dirt plume that sometimes appears when they fire a little too low versus the actual flash from the gun. The muzzle flashes in RO2 are more of a simple graphic/animation instead of something that actually exposes a player's firing position and the lack of it makes spotting players at a distance very hard unless you are zoomed in and they are shooting directly at you.

Is this intentional? It seems like either a bug or a limitation of the Unreal Engine. Or maybe I'm just spoiled by all of the crazy over the top post-processing effects that BF1 and other games have and RS2 is modeling muzzle flashes just as they would be seen in the real world. Either that, or the flashes are fine and slightly dark background environments are not lighting up in response to the flash due to UE3 engine not modeling environmental lighting or whatever the technical name for that would be.

Thoughts? Are flashes and lighting surrounding guns working as intended? Multiple people I've talked to in-game said that these lighting effects used to be a lot more apparent in beta, but disappeared suddenly around release.
