Firstly, this idea that Ro1 (OST) was the pinnacle of realism and that all shooters produced by Tripwire must be a faithful re-production of that title just with nicer graphics and different guns .... (and I was a big fan of ROOST and played it constantly).
to criticise this game for not playing like RO1 and therefore not being realistic or not being tactical is complete crap. It's a different element of realism and tactical gameplay at work in this game which is more in keeping with the scenario in which it is placed.
For instance. One thing I absolutely love about this game - the combination of automatic weapons and bullet penetration. What does this mean tactically for the game? Well, it means if you are about to attack an objective which is a building, it's not just about smoke and run in the cap (which gets real tedious at times). If you get 2 squads with an MG you can force the defenders away from the windows and defensive positions, with sustained suppressive fire. That hasn't really been available to us in previous games and for me, makes the game more realistic and also a blast.
I dont miss that it doesn't play like Ro1 or Ro2 because it's not meant to.
The level of intensity in this game is astonishing. Truly, this is the most intense, battle-like game i have ever played. Plenty of players are calling it a PTSD simulator and it approaches that at times - particularly now that the bullet cracks are back in full glory. For me, this makes it feel more realistic than RO1 because I feel like I'm in a war movie and if I stick my head out from behind that car in Hue City, Charlie is going to post it back to mama real quick.
The game still needs a good commander and SL to win, you still need to take cover constantly, apply fire, snipe, smoke positions, call in arty and balance that with the need to press on the capzone. There is nothing arcadey about this game but it seems people gotta whinge because it's not the old days and you don't get to hunker down in the ruins for 45 minutes waiting for someone to pop their head up.
It's not perfect, the maps need expanding with more variation in play and a bit more innovation would be nice, whilst the maps we have now are really good (compound excepted) but I fully expect additions and improvements to be made.
I hesitate to call myself an old RO vet as I've only being around since 2006 and didn't play in the mod days but I think it's time one of the old guard stood up for the game.
I await my roasting...
