The commander should have a special command squad that includes both radio men and 2 additional slots (invite only maybe) for a protection detail. Many times my friends and I have locked a small squad and followed the commander around on the map in this fashion to great effect. Commander and radio men are safe and able to do their jobs while participating in the battle and staying closer to the front lines.
