Instead of having 10 waves and a counter, get rid of both.
Game starts, you kill till it gets quiet, and you have no idea of how may zeds are left.
Once it gets quiet, the shopkeeper says... are they Gone yet? (which is the signal for the end of the wave)
To which a player says "i think so for now"
Then the shopkeeper will open up.
There is no timer for the shop either, well there is, but you can not see it.
Basically the shopkeeper might say 4 things as it gets closer to the shop closing as a guide to how long is left like:
1st warning: I think i hear something?
2nd warning: hurry up guys, i think they are close!
3rd Warning: Im gonna lock up...!
4th Warning: Get out!
Essentially if you get rid of all those elements, like Wave starting and countdowns etc.. it adds to the immersion.
Maybe it could be part of a realism mode?
No timers.
No ammo counts,
No ammo boxes or gun spawns.
