So I was reading a review about the upcoming patch, and the way he worded the map voting as being able to "chose where you go next" gave me an idea. It's really kind of a vague idea so far, nothing really fleshed out, but I thought it would be kind of fun and wanted to share my idea.
What if there was a game mode where you and a squad (probably better to play with friends due to longer play time required or saving and picking it up later) choose missions or are given a sequence of maps with specific objectives that have to be completed to continue to the next map.
So you do missions that are shorter versions of the objective modes from KF1, but still consist of doing either one or a handful of objectives on a map. Rather than waves, there could be non stop zeds until you finish an objective, I think thats actually how most of the objectives worked before but I'm not 100% sure. Obviously some objectives would be to hold out or defend an area, so you could bring back waves for those missions.
So when you start the campaign you have limited access to guns and equipment. After completing a mission you get dosh to spend on campaign upgrades, such as more ammo capacity or buying guns to equip on further missions and even things like extra grenades. Or rather than having to unlock guns, you could buy upgrades for the guns such as damage/clip size or specific upgrades like more bullet penetration for shotguns or explosion radius for explosives.
Now something that I think would be interesting would be kind of Iron Man or Perma-Death, so if someone dies in your squad, they lose their campaign upgrades and equipment. But as long as someone gets out alive, the game goes onto the next mission.
Now so the game doesn't just go on forever, I was thinking that later missions have, you know, the obvious difficulty increase by letting scrakes and flesh pounds in. But also by having things like mission modifiers like different experiments being done on zeds so the clots are tougher or faster, or the husks try to suicide alot quicker, or permanently enraged flesh pounds and scrakes. Something along those lines. To the point where you're just kind of supposed to lose.
I realize this probably wouldn't get official support but It would be interesting to see something like this done by the modding community.
