The following forum thread describes the issue in detail, but below it is a summary of the issue: http://forums.tripwireinteractive.co....php?p=1319004
Currently, the client will not attempt to connect to any server with an IP address in the 5.0.0.0/8 IP block. This currently affects around 20 servers, and the number is set to grow now that the IP block is publicly available, and hosting companies such as Hetzner and OVH are provisioning servers within this range.
The issue is believed to exist for one of two reasons:
- Until November 2010, this IP block was reserved, and has only been brought into use due to the global IPv4 shortage. It is possible that the client is designed not to connect to servers in private ranges.
- Up until around the same time, Hamachi used to use the 5.0.0.0/8 IP block (they had to move to 25.0.0.0/8 when the block became public to avoid collisions). The client may be designed to block this range so that people couldn't host servers over hamachi (I can't think of a good reason for this, but I imagine something piracy related).
In both cases, the "reasons" no longer apply, so there is no reason why the block should be in place, as it is only affecting legitimate servers.
Thank you for your time.
