Suggestion, a better melee combat system then using movement keys.

In the recent PC gamer video about KF2 and the interview they mention about using the movement keys to determine what move you do, IE move left and you do this move or move right to do this.

I have played many action adventure games throughout my life, from games like Die by the sword, Rune, Jedi Knight, Mount and Blade and many others.

A lot of these games went the route of "movement key = your action" and while it worked ok for those games it just never felt "right."

Having to move to do a combat move ends up feeling sloppy, it creates a disconnect between the player and action because you have to do something you may very well NOT want to do (IE move) in order to pull off a move.

There was one game that imo topped all these other games as far as melee combat goes, it was called Severance (Aka Blade of Darkness in the US).

It had a similar setup to the above games but the developers figured out a brilliant way around having to tie your movement to your combat, and that was solved by having an "action" key (by default your left mouse key).

Basically instead of moving and THEN pressing an "attack" key like you do in most of the other games you instead press the mouse button and THEN you can press w/s/a/d in order to perform all sorts of combat moves. This allows you to move ONLY when you want and overall it just makes combat feel sooooooo much more fluid/better, not like you're trying to fight against the game to both move where you want and do what move you want to.

This even opened it up a TON for allowing combo's and things to rival "fighting" games on the consoles, with button combinations and other things to do a lot of different moves dependent on both the weapon you were using and character you were using.

All you had to do to move was simply let go of the mouse to roll or quickly double tap a key to quick-step out of the way of attacks.

It was quick, fluid, and it felt a lot more immersive becuas you not longer had players just hap hazardly "dancing" around swinging their weapons without any regard for their feet or movement.

The closest thing to even come close to that kind of combat and the depth behind it is the Dark souls series, but it's still not as in depth (no where near the amount of moves).

To see what I am talking about compare this:

Mainly how in the Jedi Knight video the players are constantly moving around without regard for their enemy or feet placement, it looks awkward.

Now compare it to the video of Severance, the player is a lot more focused on the enemy, he moves only when he needs/wants to and it doesn't have the feeling of the jittery/slippy motion going on because of this.
