Putting the "Horror" in "Co-Op Survival Horror"

Killing Floor had a unique mixture of horror and humor. It was the equivalent of a cheesy action movie which is grand, but I still think the horror half was lacking. For example, some of the specimens looked pretty scary on the main menu (the Siren in particular) yet their appearances in-game couldn't reproduce the feeling. I want to be scared. I want to mildly crap my pants. I'm not asking for screamers and jump scares (barring Sirens & Crawlers ) since this is an FPS first, but I feel that tweaking the mood to be a bit more on the horror side of things would be an improvement. Just take a look at the original Killing Floor mod. And even something little like the addition of ambient noises in a map can have an effect. So far in Killing Floor 2 we know of things like the Fleshpound charging at you, lights being dynamic and destroyable, enhanced graphics / animations, etc. There are all the kinds of things that I hope the rest of Killing Floor 2 is oozing with.

So really I just want to know where Tripwire currently stands on this and how the rest of you think it should be paired with the obligatory "coolism" elements. We're all confident that the humor is returning, I just think that it would be easier to appreciate this humor if it's broken up by more serious moments. My apologies if this isn't articulated as well as it deserves to be.
