The server sided hit detection works with both tanks and infantry, but it's nearly impossible to hit a moving enemy.
With the client sided hit detection, as i know, it would be more realistic and easy to hit moving enemies (IRL you don't have to consider your ping), but it wouldn't be convenient to use it for tanks.
My suggestion is to have the possibility of changing the hit detection in-game, by simply pressing a button. So you can choose the hit detection depending on the target.
