Hey guys, I just wanted to express my enthusiasm and joy with my recent Fallout 3 experience. I played the game in 2008 on Playstation 3 and was generally favorable towards it. I enjoyed it and thought the setting was cool, but thought that the gameplay mechanics were gimmicky (I hate the VATs system) and that the challenge of the game was moot.
I've recently installed it and modded it with Fallout Wander's Edition, Mart's Mutant Mod, Fellout, and "Mini Hideout". It's completely awesome. FWE basically tweaks every aspect of gameplay... you can read about it here http://ift.tt/1kK24tj? ...MMM diversifies enemies and adds a bunch of new ones.... Fellout just removes the ubiquitous green "radioactive" glow of everything and makes the sky blue again (makes sense 200 years after the nuclear apocalypse... Hiroshima isn't glowing green). MiniHideout adds some a little underground bunker hideout for storage, sleeping, and healing (Don't need to bother with two loading screens to get to the one in Megaton).
This is the best experience I've had with a video game since I was a child (except for RO1 ;)).
Every moment is intense and gripping. Every bullet fired is an economic choice with conservation and survival in mind. Every dungeon cleared is a unique and challenging experience, with creative decisions at the forefront of my actions. Every item is a utility, from empty syringes to tin cans. Every venture into the wasteland is full of expectations, ranging from fear to anticipation and doubt. Every decision is packed with dilemma.
The gameplay is a thousand times more intense than vanilla Fallout 3. I recall playing the vanilla version on PS3 with hum-drum ritual ... snap into VATs, select the headshot option, press the button, and win. This entire paradigm is gone. I'm using the slow-motion bullet time mechanic of FWE (which is limited by one's action points) and other than that it feels like a real shooter. You haven't lived until you've been trapped in subway tunnel, back turned to collapsed rubble, and unloaded your MP40 into a horde of oncoming ghouls... only to emerge into the sunlight with 2 bullets in your mag, and then sprint to safety with a pack of 8 raiders chasing you and firing pot shots. The sprinting mechanic alone makes the game so much better -- everything is fast, everything is dangerous. It's no longer an walk and talk RPG - it's a true shooting action running RPG hybrid.
The spawns are increased... The speed of NPCs is increased... The commodities are scarce and valuable... The gameplay is fast and tense... The diversity of items is increased... The damage of bullets is increased...
I've found myself having to employ taking cover (would've never happened in vanilla game), teeth grinding stealth, skillful sniping over ledges and horizons (again - would've never happened in vanilla), clever traps, all out rambo-grenade-tossing-mag-emptying onslaughts, political intrigue, contemplating (and committing) murder because the innocent lady down by the river had drinking water, enslavement, waiting for night time to commit clandestine activities, lockpicking, hacking, selling drugs for bullets so I can extract gunpowder and create improvised explosives, getting addicted to damage resistance pills and needing to get a fix so my strength would get up and I could carry a suit of armor to sell for necessary supplies, pitting mutants against guards and running so I can come back and collect bullets in the aftermath...
It's not without it's headaches and hard work -- the mods themselves are somewhat of a pain in the *** to install, I get the occasional crash (I'd say about once in every 3 or 4 hours of gameplay -- not bad... and it's always fine when I reload it) AND I spent a good amount of the first 5 hours of gameplay tweaking NPC speed, damage, experience rates, difficulty settings, items, etc. .... and I even worked towards tweaking some mechanics that I ended up disabling (There were thirst/hunger/sleep requirements that I kept lowering because I just found them tedious and not fun and eventually just disabled.... similarly, there's an option to replace fast travel with a motorcycle that you click on for fast travel, and have to maintain with spare parts and fuel... I also disabled the triage system which means you have to limp around every time your leg gets shot unless you have crutches and rope to make a brace)... and there's been a couple of times where I've had to reload the same quick save 15 times because I keep getting one shotted by some crazy *** lazer beam or trapped in a corner surrounded by enemies way ahead of me in level... But I've always emerged without having to utilize god mode. Sometimes it means I have to frantically expend all my ammo, explosives, and/or medicine and then lay low for a while I accumulate supplies... Sometimes it means I have to abandon whatever endeavor I'm attempting and revisit when I'm more prepared.... Sometimes it means total failure.
I can't extol the virtues of these mods enough. Whoever the "FWE Team" is should be funded to make a game. Every single moment in the game feels fresh and exciting and gripping and just plain fun. If you're a PC gamer on the TWI forums, you must at least give it a shot. If you played Fallout 3 and enjoyed it -- drop everything you're doing right now, install the game, install the mods, and proceed into gaming nirvana.
Make sure you have the GOTY edition, or all the DLC, and watch this video to help installation of the mods ... http://ift.tt/1mV1Smx
