Problem with creating new MICs

I've been working on a new map after learning the basics, but with a limited selection as far as MICs go, I've had to edit existing ones to better fit the map I'm making as well as just fixing them. (The Manor Cliffside material has snow particle effects for instance when applied to the cliff faces from Outpost)

The problem I'm experiencing is, none of these materials are saving the changes I make to them. I thought that maybe it's because I need to make a new one based off the existing parent materials they supply then apply the textures I wanted to use, so I do that, but those don't save for me either. When I close the SDK and reopen, any meshes I've applied those new materials to will be gone and the material will no longer be available in the External "Package" or whatever you want to call that folder structure.

In short, I've followed the instructions listed here, on the Tripwire Wiki, but to no avail. Though the material works at first, it does not load again, nor can it be recovered, after I've closed the SDK.

And on a side note, I've noticed that some folk are creating their own meshes and materials and getting them to work for them. How is this done exactly? Is there a guide for this online?

While I've tried to learn and teach myself, the guides online don't really seem to apply to KF2 SDK, only UDK, which isn't much help.
